A LITTLE CALIFORNIA HISTORY

Why Smog Checks Matter

California · Cleaner Air · Stronger Communities

California started its statewide Smog Check program in 1984 to help reduce pollution from cars and trucks. Since then, vehicle inspections have evolved from tailpipe measurements to modern onboard diagnostics. At GTO Smog Check, we appreciate both classic cars and newer technology—because cleaner air starts with every vehicle doing its part.

Testing requirements vary by vehicle year, type and location.

OLDER VEHICLE INSPECTIONS

Classic cars. Specialized smog testing.

Older California vehicles can require more than a diagnostic scan. Depending on model year, equipment, vehicle type and inspection area, your Smog Check may include fuel-vapor leak checks and a tailpipe emissions test with the engine running.

1976–1995

EVAP & Fuel-Cap Testing

For applicable gasoline vehicles equipped with evaporative-emissions controls, the inspection can include a fuel-cap integrity test and a low-pressure fuel evaporative test (LPFET).

  • Fuel cap: A tester checks whether the cap properly seals and holds pressure.
  • EVAP system: Where required, specialized equipment checks the fuel-vapor system for leaks at low pressure.
  • Why it matters: Fuel vapors can escape even when the engine runs normally.

Requirements and exemptions depend on the vehicle. These tests are not automatically required on every pre-1996 vehicle.

1976–1999

Dyno / Loaded Emissions Test

Most applicable vehicles in California's Enhanced Smog Check areas undergo an Acceleration Simulation Mode (ASM) test on a chassis dynamometer, sometimes called a “rolling-road” test.

  • Driving simulation: The drive wheels turn rollers while the vehicle is tested under a controlled load.
  • Tailpipe readings: The analyzer measures pollutants including hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx).
  • Test modes: Applicable vehicles typically complete the 50/15 and 25/25 loaded test sequences.

Some vehicles cannot use a two-wheel dynamometer and may require a different procedure. In Basic areas, applicable vehicles generally receive a two-speed idle test instead.

Your catalytic converter matters.

A catalytic converter helps reduce harmful pollutants in vehicle exhaust. A missing, damaged, or non-compliant converter can prevent a vehicle from passing a California Smog Check.

Your vehicle may require a visual inspection and an emissions or onboard-diagnostics check, depending on its model year and test requirements. Replacement converters must meet applicable California requirements.
